This truly is a compelling novel. Not your standard romantic fluff with cookie cutter characters and predictable plot line. It's a meaningful story about two lesbians who accidentally enter each others lives, fall in love despite their differences (and some underlying shared interests), and struggle over time to come to understand themselves as individuals and as a couple. Most of the book is well grounded in believable reality (with the exception of a conversation with a 10 year old niece who she hadn't seen in 4 years - which scored some preachy points about family relationships and behavior.) If you're looking for pages and pages of in-bed action, you won't find it here. If you're looking for a story that highlights the best and not-so-good in relationships, shows honest struggle with self-growth and self-realization, and provides some lighter moments while doing it, and you're not afraid to see those through the lens of a lesbian perspective, you'll love this book.Product details

This a very compelling story with lots of plot twists and character choices. I won't reveal them here; suffice it to say, the complexity Makes the story have verve and drive. It is what keeps you riveted and keeps you reading. It is not a simplistic story, but one in which characters are well-drawn out. They live and breathe and are driven; they have ethics and complicated family dynamics. I won't give the story away, the synopsis gives you an idea of the storyline. This novel is WORTH a read, and then another!!! Just when I wanted a character to make a decision, the plot twisted, and there was more complexity to deal with. Like Life! Family dynamics are not always easy, and Werlinger never takes the easy way out. This draws out the story and keeps you enjoying more and more depth to the story. This is a real compelling story, a real ADD To a To BE Read List. Add it to yours, you won't regret it!!!
Once again, Caren Werlinger creates a many layered character study of two dissimilar personalities a midlife academic and a younger woman who find that their awkward and judgmental first impressions are all wrong. A friendship develops around their mutual admiration of Jane Austen and romantic literature. Soon, a deeper connection leads to feelings of love. Past secrets haunt both women as they struggle to take a leap of faith in their growing relationship.
Margaret, a college professor, has lived her entire adult life in the shadow of her much older husband who is both a mentor and father figure. Wyck, a former Rhodes scholar, gives up her academic career to pursue her love of landscape architecture. She has been betrayed once and is reluctant to give her heart again. Nonetheless, she finds herself falling in love with Margaret.
In the end, it is Margaret who has to find the courage to break from the past if she really wants to reclaim her true self. Can she do it?
I have read several books by this author and have yet to be disappointed. Thoughtful storytelling and believable plots. I really do like her work and admire the copious research which goes into each novel. Mind boggling.
"She Sings of Old, Unhappy, Far-Off Things" is the third book by Caren Werlinger that I have recently read and reviewed for . The previous two, "Year of the Monsoon" (November 18, 2016) and "Neither Present Time" (February 5, 2017) received 5-star evaluations from me as well.
This author has an unerring and brilliantly sensitive eye for the nuances of LGBT relationships in modern settings. In this book she deals with the struggles of Margaret Braithwaite, a literature teacher at religiously-affiliated St. Aloysius College in Asheville, NC, to deal with the impending demise from cancer of her overbearing husband, Gavin. Although attracted to women, due to her father's rejection of her first lesbian relationship, Margaret has shut off all emotions. Having written a successful novel as a young woman, she became Gavin's second wife, raised his children after their mother's death, and became his research assistant, always in his shadow as he published numerous scholarly tomes on Civil War topics. This shadow existence, however, becomes more and more untenable as his illness progresses, and she simultaneously falls in love with Wyck Fitzsimmons, the female landscape architect Gavin has hired to maintain his beloved garden. When Gavin senses the growing attraction between Margaret and Wyck, his homophobia explodes, and of course a major crisis develops.
As I commented in my other reviews of Werlinger's books, besides the extremely sensitive and powerful development of her human characters, this author also includes wonderful non-human "people", in this case Wyck's dog Mandy, who plays a significant part in the story. This book is another addition to what I perceive is a major contribution to the LGBT genre.
But it's as if I'm reading it for the first time each time I reread it. Lol, at first I never do like the snobbish Margaret. And I can't relate to someone choosing to forgo a life of love to preserve their social status.
I guess that's difference between generations.
As usual, I always come to like Margaret after she changes due to Wyck's influence in her life.
I guess I'd be more understanding if I had lost people because of my personal life, thankfully I've not. I'm not one to give in to ultimatums. It's easier to just end a manipulative relationship cleanly and concisely than to get bitter as it draws out and ends badly anyway.
It's a good book, I just wish there was more of Margaret and Wyck together in it. Probably why I've only read it 3 times, versus the 20+ time I've read my favorites.
