Thin Air Weather Warden Book 6 (Audible Audio Edition) Rachel Caine Dina Pearlman Audible Studios Books

Thin Air is a great book. Some complain about falling into cliche in the series, and this book in particular, but most good stories are built upon certain models, boy meets girl, good vs evil, there are certain archetypes that EVERY good story uses, otherwise it would not have any appeal to the reader. would you really want to read a story that was just "Harry went to work again, collected his paycheck, and went home...just another day in the boring life of Harry..."? or did that story get better when Harry met Sally, or the even better version where Harry met Murphy, then they kicked some a**? *this is just an example, not an endorsement of any particular story ;)

Unlike some reviewers, I don't downgrade the book as compared to previous books in the series, I compare it to fantasy books in general, and it is still 5 stars. If you want unlimited, flowing and gushing praise, read another review, I'm just going to tell you it's worth reading if you like contemporary fantasy and urban fantasy. However, don't start with this book, go back and start with the first in the series, Ill Wind, or you might be lost and/or confused.

This series is excellent. It takes a well written series to interest me and convince me to spend my hard-earned dollars to invest in multiple books. I have found this book, and this series, worth it.

The book isn't exactly challenging mentally, but most people buy books for the entertaining story, and you will find it here!

Thin Air Weather Warden Book 6 (Audible Audio Edition) Rachel Caine Dina Pearlman Audible Studios Books Reviews

I was actually really enjoying this series until this book, and then there was one detail that I just couldn't get over. The first 5 novels listed a town - a town in which a lot of pertinent action occurs - as being in Maine. Suddenly, without explanation, this town was in New Jersey in this novel. This was not mentioned just once and then corrected; it was consistently and repeatedly in New Jersey, even after the author acknowledges other events that happened around said town were in Maine. This probably sounds like a niggling, nit-picky detail, but at that point, I just felt insulted. I'm not sure I actually want to read the remaining books in the series.
It was interesting reading a book that is number six in a series that essentially starts the story over in many ways. I admit I didn't go back and read any of the other 5 before starting this latest offering of Ms. Caine, and so basically entered the book as amnesial as the main character. This does mean that I may have lost some of the undertones, but I also think it helped me come into the story with a similar sense of faint familiarity for the characters, yet without being able to unroll their entire history from memory.
Her writing style continues to entertain, and I still like her heroine [as well as some of the sidekicks]. Ms. Caine is clearly trying to keep her style fresh, and hasn't dipped too far into the romance side of what has become an interesting paranormal story on its own. Good work, and a good continuation.
Perhaps the best thing I will comment on is that Ms. Caine is still ptting together books that have a story that is encompassed by the book. Yes, there is a larger arc going on, but there is still a story that starts on page 1 and ends with the back cover. This one is far closer to violating my preference for one book, one story, since it starts where the last one left off, but there are still resolution points, and things happen within the story.
The series has always been very action packed, with so much going on that sometimes I've had to re-read sections when I found myself being like - what?! wait, what just happened?

This book is an interesting addition to the series, but her editor is getting lazy / Caine had a difficult time keeping track of things. Wasn't Seacasket in Maine in all the previous books? Now suddenly it's in New Jersey! It's the magical moving city!
That's just an example of some of the inconsistencies in the book/series - world building is not Caine's strong suit, like many urban fantasy authors she relies on the reader filling in the gaps with our own world experiences. That being said, Joanne's a good character and you'll be rooting for her throughout this book. (amnesia! Memories taken by a demon! After all this girl has gone through, can't she get a break?)

Heads up though - you'll need to read all the previous books to follow this one. Book number 6 is not where to start!
I have to say I got a little bored with this one, but I'm willing to cut it a little slack. The previous book, Firestorm, took us right to the brink of the Apocalypse, and there really wasn't much of anywhere to go from there. She spent the first five books telling us about the old order as she was thoroughly destroying that order, and at the end of book five, that order pretty much hits rock bottom.

So, where do you go from there?

I'd guess you start building the new order, and this book gives us a taste for that. Unfortunately, it spent too much time bringing us up to speed on what happened before through various flashbacks and the likes. I'll grant you that the mechanism for the flashbacks was interesting, but it still felt a bit like one of those lame clip shows that seem to hit sit-coms around the fifth season.

There are three more books in there series, and I'll probably read them, just to find out what happens to folks, but after this one, I'm almost wishing I could just get the Cliff Notes version. It's not that it wasn't well written. The writing was fine. The voice, the action, all of that good stuff... it's all there. Rachel Caine knows what she's doing. It's just that I felt shortchanged by plot in this one.
